On June 30, University of Sheffield Confucius Institute Hotel Chinese Language course ended in Copthorne Hotel, the local four-star hotel. This Chinese language course is divided into two phases, each lasts for eight weeks, two Chinese teachers who have long been engaged in adult Chinese teaching and workplace Chinese teaching served as speaker.
Two courses attracted nearly 20 participants. Under the careful design of the Confucius Institute teachers, the curriculum takes the topic and the scene as the outline, covering the daily basic Chinese communicative content of transacting occupancy, meals, room service, processing customer complaints, check out and other hotel services. Teachers also introduced the hotel services related to Chinese cultural knowledge, such as the preferences of Chinese people on the numbers, different salutation for customers of different ages and the habits of Chinese guests to check in and their quests etc.
After class, teachers and teaching assistants often disguised as China guests and imitate the real situation dialogues with students. Because that hotel has many Chinese guests, the teachers would lead the students to practice their Chinese in the hotel in serving the customers. Whenever students say “Nihao” and “Xiexie” to their guests and get a friendly response, it can further stimulate their enthusiasm for learning Chinese.
