Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the result of 2013 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. Doctoral graduate of our school Wang Lining’s "Differentiation of Chinese Dialect Tones" was selected to the one hundred national excellent doctoral dissertations. This was the first time of our school won the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation since 1999 when begun to recruit doctors, achieving a great breakthrough.
Wang Lining was one of the 2006 doctors of the Institute of Linguistics (now part of the Language Academy) majoring in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and her tutor was Professor Cao Zhiyun. He paper "Differentiation of Chinese Dialect Tones" takes the phenomena of the differentiation of Chinese dialects tones as object, and has made a comprehensive study on the types of the differentiation of Chinese dialect tones, geographical distribution and evolution mechanisms based on the materials of 930 dialect sites in our school "Chinese dialect atlas database" by diachronic and synchronic comparison, combined with geographical linguistics theories, which has made a series of innovative achievements.
