On the evening of June 17, a special concert of zither performers from eleven countries across four continents was held in Beijing Language and Culture University.
What headlined the concert are the overseas students of BLCU. Although the performance level of these performers is limited, such a zither concert, with a Chinese teacher and foreign student performers, is still the first in China. On that night, the performances included Chinese folk songs “jasmine”, “A fishing boat song at dusk”, “High mountain, flowing water”, “Peng Ba Ban” and “Birds worship the phoenix”. Interestingly, they have made innovations in the performance of zither and used zither to perform their native music.
Teacher Sun Run believes that the teaching of Zither should not only pay attention to students’ performance level, but should also let them understand the history of zither and learn zither from a cultural perspective. This teaching concept also enables overseas students to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture while learning how to play the zither.
